The Chicago-based duo SUN SPEAK comprises longtime collaborators Matt Gold (guitars) and Nate Friedman (drums and percussion). Since the 2014 release of their debut recording Light Blue Light (Genghis Records), Sun Speak has continued to solidify a compositional voice encompassing folk, jazz, and experimental music.
Sun Speak is quickly growing a dedicated following throughout the Midwest and East Coast, with performances at The Green Mill (Chicago), Spectrum (New York), The Bop Stop (Cleveland), Pyramid Atlantic (Washington, D.C.) and more. The band has twice served as artists-in-residence at Avaloch Farm Music Institute, and has given masterclasses at universities, high schools, and community centers.
Matt has worked with a wide array of creative minds including Jamey Haddad, Sean Jones, Petros Klampanis, Vincent Davis, Cory Henry, Underground System Afrobeat, J-Live, and others.
Drums and Percussion
Nate Friedman is a drummer and percussionist from Washington, DC. He attended the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, where he was fortunate to study with Billy Hart, Jamey Haddad, and Paul Samuels. Since graduating, he has been living and working in Chicago, Illinois, where he collaborates with a wide variety of artists.
Nate is a member of the Chicago electric chamber duo SUN SPEAK, who have been awarded residencies from the Avaloch Farm Music Institute and have toured nationally. He has played in venues across the country, including the Green Mill, Blues Alley, Nighttown, Shapeshifter Lab, and Spectrum. He has been lucky to share the stage with artists including Kenny Werner, Dave Liebman, Rufus Reid, Jamey Haddad, Jay Ashby, Leo Blanco, Petros Klampanis, and Alon Yavnai.
